TRACE CITY
An Imaginary City Built from Noise
「TRACE CITY」

Architecture can exist in people's imagination, even if it is never built.
From Boullée and Ledoux, who envisioned ideal architecture beyond the limits of reality through drawings and engravings in the 18th century, to the archaic qualities of Louis Kahn's architecture and Aldo Rossi's analogical architecture, among others. These approaches reveal another dimension of architecture that goes beyond rationality and function, engaging human memory and imagination.
"TRACE CITY" is a series of works that constructs imaginary urban landscapes using noise generated by an old photocopier.
By transforming and composing these accidental, irregular traces, architectural forms such as walls, stairways, and passages begin to emerge. They may evoke ancient ruins or modern concrete structures, yet they belong to no particular time or place and serve no defined purpose. The architecture simply exists, leaving its interpretation to the viewer.
Using parallel projection without vanishing points, these drawings resemble fragments of an imaginary city seen from above. Each stands independently, yet they appear to be connected somewhere within the same world.
The water surfaces depicted in every work reflect this imaginary city, further blurring the boundary between fiction and reality.
Today, we live in an increasingly noise-free age, where noise is removed from images, sound, and information in pursuit of greater precision and efficiency. Yet human beings themselves are inherently imperfect. Irregular and unpredictable noise seems, in some way, to embrace our imperfections, sometimes offering a sense of comfort.
The noise left behind by an old photocopier is itself a trace of imperfection. Within what would normally be removed, I find compelling textures that could never be created intentionally, and use them to construct new spaces. In this process, noise is reborn, no longer a flaw but a material for creation.
"TRACE CITY" is an imaginary city constructed from architectural memories and accidental traces, existing somewhere between the past and the future.
